Our Vision & Mission
Climate change is without doubt one of the biggest challenges of our time. As climate change is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, it is inevitable for humanity to more actively and collectively combat climate change. Various political, economic, academic and civil society actors have been trying to contribute to a more sustainable world in diverse ways. In this sense, governments around the world have established sustainable development goals and strategies, and the UN has released the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Companies are increasingly bringing green products on the market. Universities across the globe are expanding their teaching and research activities in sustainability science, climate resilience and environmental studies. Civil society actors, including non-governmental organizations, have been increasingly involved in global environmental processes by establishing transnational grassroots networks and have thus become key drivers in global environmental governance.
Despite the various approaches and strategies in promoting sustainability undertaken by these diverse actors, they all draw on collective action. Whether it is on a local, national, international or transnational level - promoting sustainability requires collective action. In addition, they all make use of data. Data is not only crucial for measuring climate change, it also plays a key role for various actors to understand their own and other actor’s impact on the environment. Data is the key point of entry to evaluating more sustainable alternative courses of action. Therefore, it plays a vital role in making our world more sustainable.
As the amount of data available around the world continues to grow, there is a lack of platforms enabling the diverse group of key climate change stakeholders and changemakers to make their knowledge and sustainability data accessible to all in a very efficient manner through a central registry. The Organization for Sustainable Consumption (OfnK) initiated the Open Sustainability Registry (OSR) to provide a solution to this challenge.
What is currently missing is a standard and a register to manage and share this type of data. The purpose of the OSR is to accumulate this data and make it accessible to all. To gain transparency and visibility against the backdrop of our environmental impact, we urgently need a publicly accessible and central register for all sustainability data. The Open Sustainability Registry enables all stakeholders in the EU to monitor the targets set by businesses and policymakers, and to measure their progress in this area. At the same time, it serves as a helpful and reliable tool that enables consumers to make more sustainable purchasing decisions.
Our Approach & Key Advantages
The central idea behind the OSR is that sustainability data and knowledge should be shared with all in a transparent manner as they are the basis for alleviating climate change. The OSR is a collaborative, free and transparent data knowledge network which enables various actors to share their sustainability information and data with the public in an easy and efficient manner. In this sense, it highly encourages and enables joint cooperation. Moreover, it allows a variety of actors to use the data to promote sustainability in numerous ways. This approach has the following advantages.
- Collaboration
- The OSR promotes and relies on joint cooperation and collaboration among diverse actors with the common goal of tackling climate change.
- Inclusiveness
- Not only can various actors add their data to the platform, anyone can easily access the OSR for free. By making sustainability data accessible to all, an inclusive approach to climate action is promoted.
- Transparency
- Data transparency and accountability are achieved as the sources of all data and information are published.
- Innovation
- Collaboration, inclusiveness and transparency can all be achieved by using the innovative Semantic MediaWiki technology, which connects existing data through a knowledge network. Not only does this enable joint cooperation, it even allows different actors to actively participate in its continued development.
About the Organization for Sustainable Consumption
We, the Organization for Sustainable Consumption (OfnK), the initiator behind the OSR, have set ourselves the task of educating consumers about their individual impact on the environment. Our overall goal is to make consumers aware of their consumption behavior and the ecological and environmental consequences. Our team consists of unique people with a common goal – making our world more sustainable. We have data analysts, bank/financial IT specialists, lawyers, mathematicians, marketing/PR specialists, and experienced entrepreneurs, all of whom have established several companies in software and firmware development as well as finance – with the most diverse of teams. We all share the enthusiasm and passion to finally work on something independently and not have to go through the typical politics.
